Head Injuries & Traumatic Brain Injury

Posted by:

For many decades, many people believed that when you hit your head during a sporting event or accident, you just needed to “walk it off”.  Now we know how wrong we were thanks to the research into NFL players' brain injuries.

Researchers have determined that a concussion or traumatic brain injury is not a one-time event, and these injuries initiate a process of cellular damage which ripples through the brain and often has long lasting effects.

We often think of head injuries as they relate to sports.  You may recall that Dale Earnhardt Sr. died of a brain injury during a 2001 NASCAR crash. His son, Jr., also suffered a series of crashes that left him with lingering symptoms and ultimately led to his early retirement from racing.

You don't need to be a professional athlete or any other type of sports enthusiast to suffer a head injury.  A simple fall or accident can be far more damaging that previously thought.

Recognizing the syptoms of a concusion or brain injurty are crucial. As mentionoed, a severe head injury is common in many types of accidents, including car collisions, falls, bicycle accidents and motorcycle crashes. It’s critical the symptoms are recognized and properly diagnosed. Some common signs of a severe head injusry are;

  • Headache or “pressure” in head.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Balance problems or dizziness, or double or blurry vision.
  • Bothered by light or noise.
  • Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy.
  • Confusion, or concentration or memory problems.
  • Just not “feeling right,” or “feeling down”

Any accident that results in impact to the head should be a concern and may require a doctor visit or discussion with a medical team member.  Don’t “walk it off” and suffer further problems in future.
