Truck Accidents & Work Zone Safety

Posted by:

Late summer is typically a busy time for road construction as the weather provides a great opportunity for repairs and new projects. At the same time, heavy traffic  can create hazards for motorists driving through these areas. This is particularly true when it comes to tractor trailers, semi-trucks, and other types of big rigs. Work zones create major risks when it comes to truck accidents. To protect yourself and your passengers, be aware of the dangers and the steps you can take to prevent these types of crashes.

Truck Accident Risks Increase in Work Zones
Truck accidents become more common in the late summer and early fall months, as road maintenance and construction projects create additional hazards. Work zones on highways and interstates increases the risk for all types of motor vehicle accidents, but truck accidents have additional dangers. In addition to the risks these pose to truck drivers and road construction crews, these crashes can cause potentially life-threatening injuries for other motorists and their passengers. Some of the most common causes of work zone truck accidents include:

  • Speeding and driving too fast for conditions
  • Distracted driving, such as using cell phones or texting
  • Failure to follow detour signs and other road construction signals
  • Failure to yield to other motorists in areas where there are road closures and lane changes

It is important to remember that in addition to the usual penalties you could face for speeding and other traffic infractions, fines double in areas under construction regardless of whether any workers are present.

Preventing Work Zone Truck Accidents
Motorists are not the only ones urged to use caution in work zones. Truck drivers are required to take additional precautions in these areas as well, as truck accidents threaten not only them, but other drivers on the road. Work Zone Safety offers the following tips for truckers that are designed to prevent crashes and collisions. To protect themselves, automobile drivers should follow them as well:

  • Be alert for road work signs
  • Opt for detours that allow you to avoid the area
  • Slow down and leave plenty of space between you and other motorists
  • Expect stops and traffic delays
  • Avoid responding to aggressive drivers, who may weave in and out of lanes or attempt to speed up and get ahead of you in line
